Sandton City, Johannesburg

Ted’s first store in Johannesburg was inspired by the city’s landmark Shakespeare Garden. The entrance is alive with trailing greenery; inside is an ornate gilded ceiling reminiscent of a noble Elizabethan home. The walls recreate a botanical conservatory and references to the bard are numerous (the skull of “poor Yorick”, the Merchant of Venice’s scales, to name just two). Offsetting the verdure are heavy fabrics and tapestries, books of Shakespeare’s plays made into sculptural panels, and lighting inspired by the Elizabethan ruff.
