Taikoo Hui, Shanghai

During the 1920’s and 30’s Shanghai became known as the ‘Paris of the East’ and ‘the New York of the West’. Artistically, Shanghai became the hub for three distinct art forms: Chinese cinema, Chinese Animation and Chinese popular music. This was the birthplace of Chinese Cinema & Theatre and their film industry blossomed further in the 1930’s. Back in the UK cinema flourished during the golden era. Many were of the early Odeon’s were designed in the art deco style by architect Harry Weedon. Taking inspiration from his curvy buildings and the art deco aerodynamic streamline we have incorporated curves into our shop interior, we looked at the soft furnishings, grand entrances, and jazzy floors of the cinema. The art deco movement of the 1930s saw the use of curved shapes to create a sense of motion and energy. This aesthetic was embraced by architects of the time, who incorporated curves into their designs to create a sense of movement and dynamism.
